Do you ever get frustrated that you don't get the ball much in hockey games?
What if you could make your own chances by creating more turnovers?
That's why today we'll look at an example of how to create a turnover in field hockey from the left, beat the player on the outside and score a goal.
In this video, I take you through the key points of creating a turnover and capitalising on it:
Here is a summary of the key points:
To put pressure on the opposition, get close enough to them to get their head down, stay low and have your stick on the ground so that you're ready to make an interception.
Once you've made some contact with the ball, make sure to secure possession by moving the ball into a space and accelerate to get ahead of the player.
Use your body to protect the ball and block the defender from making any contact with the ball. In this example the player moves the ball onto his left using the space along the baseline and then uses a one hand dribble to keep the ball out of range of the defender.
Change your angle of attack by coming off the baseline and cut the defender off and improve your options and chances of scoring.
As you continue your run, keep the ball on your stick so that it makes it harder for defenders to get the ball (without a stick foul) and allows you to get quicker shots away.
Develop the ability to flick while on the move (off both feet) and when you're in this position a good target to aim for is above the goalkeepers shoulders, which is often a difficult area for GK's to stop.
Once you've scored, don't forget to celebrate with your team mates. Then reset and go again.
I've put together a FREE 20 min training video sharing the 4 Steps To Get Noticed In Hockey, including how to avoid the same mistakes that I made (and that many others make too) when striving to reach a higher level in hockey.
