Lateral Ball Carry To Open Up Options In Field Hockey

Do you ever get the ball or take free hits and feel like you don't have any options on?

I used to think that ball carrying was all about dribbling and trying to eliminate players, but what if it's crowded and you know that if you try to dribble through players you'll probably just turn the ball over.

One of the points I covered in the Going For Gold Workshop (where I share 7 key differences between good and great masters players) is about being an attacking threat when you get the ball (even as a defender).

Now there are various ways to be an attacking threat.

One example is to use lateral ball carry, especially when it's crowded and you don't have any options to go forward.

Who says dribbling has to be forward?

By moving the ball laterally you give yourself more time to get your head up which will improve your vision to better connect with team mates and it will also open up passing lines, making it harder for the opposition to defend.

Check out the video below where I demonstrate how you can use lateral ball carry effectively to eliminate players and open up passing lines.

Are you a masters hockey player wanting to play your best in national or international tournaments?

I've put together a NEW 2.5 hour workshop for Masters Hockey Players where I dive deep into 7 key lessons I learnt during the 2024 Masters World Cups, where I took part both as a player (where we won Gold in Cape Town) and also as a coach (where we won Bronze in Auckland).

In this workshop I show practical examples that highlight the key differences between good and great masters players taken directly from the Masters World Cup. These insights are crucial for masters hockey players striving to perform their best in national and international tournaments.
