Want to know how to improve your overhead to get more consistency or to throw the ball further?

In the video below I cover some of the common mistakes players make and I share a few tips on how to improve your overhead in field hockey.

3 Tips To Improve Overhead in Field Hockey

Here's a summary of the key points:

#1: Ball position on pickup

One of the biggest mistakes players make is where they pickup the ball. Although some players might have their own preference, in general try to aim to pickup the ball around the middle of your front (left) foot which makes it easier to pickup the ball.

#2: Drop your right shoulder to get low

Most players have their stick too upright on connection with the ball, so try to drop your right shoulder towards the ground and bring your stick and your left hand towards your right arm. This will help you to get underneath the ball and creates a longer lever, allowing you to throw the ball further.

#3: Use your legs for more power

To get more distance on your overhead / aerial, make sure you're using your legs by pushing your back (right) foot away from the ground and transferring your weight to get more power.

Bonus tip: Add disguise to your pass

Approach the overhead like you would any other free hit by adding some disguise on your pass, so that the opposition are less likely to read it.

You can do this by looking one way and then throwing it the other way.
